Cataloging the Library of Things

Introduction

This procedure can be used for cataloging items beyond the traditional collections of books, CDs, DVDs, etc. This includes toys, games, puppets, musical instruments, scientific devices, cooking and craft equipment, tools, meters, equipment, etc. This method of cataloging accommodates more local information.

Local Records

Each library will create their own separate records for this type of material — the records are created by the library, are not overlaid by NOBLE, and only have items for that library. NOBLE will provide documentation, training, examples and consultation on special materials cataloging.

Each library will create their own separate records for this type of material — the records are created by the library, are not overlaid by NOBLE, and only have items for that library.  NOBLE will provide documentation, training, examples and consultation on special materials cataloging.

The library can decide how to divide up their material.  For example, a library can with musical instruments can do any of the following:

  • Create a single record with the title Musical Instruments with items with the call numbers Ukulele #1, Guitar #2, etc.
  • Create individual records with the titles Ukulele and Guitar, and items with call number like Ukulele #1 or Mitchell MU40 Soprano Ukulele
  • Create a separate record for each individual instrument
  • Any combination of the above (most musical instruments may be on a single, generic record, but a special one may get its own record)

Contents of the Bibliographic Record

  • Library name in the author field (110)
  • Title, subtitle and statement of responsibility created by library in 245 subfields a, b and c
  • Use MARC fields 500, 505, 520 and 538 as needed for description of the material, usage or circulation information, list of contents in kit, etc.
  • Libraries can add series (490) fields to their records, for example, “Reading Library of Things” or “Melrose Toy and Game Collection,” etc.
  • NOBLE can add a “cover image” supplied by the library to the record
  • Libraries can use the 856 field to add links to appropriate local web pages, online product manuals, etc.

Images

Libraries can use MARC tag 956 to embed an image in the bib record that will appear in the catalog display above the list of items. This can be just a single image, and it can optionally also have a caption

Subfield u is used for the URL to an image hosted on your website. Optionally, you can use Subfield t to link the image to a larger version or to another URL, perhaps to a website or online manual. You can also add subfield c to add a caption
