Managing Predictions

When you create a subscription you need to apply a prediction pattern representing the title’s publication schedule.  If the publication schedule changes, you will need to apply a new prediction pattern to accommodate the changes.

Note: there is a user permission required to manage predictions (e.g. add, delete)

Creating Prediction Patterns

To create a prediction pattern:

  • First, find the bib record for the serial title you need to add the prediction pattern for
  • Select the “Serials” button
  • Choose “Manage Subscriptions”
  • Select the “Manage Predictions” tab

There are three possible ways to create or access an existing prediction pattern:

  1. Add a new prediction pattern from scratch
  2. Import an existing prediction pattern
  3. Create a prediction pattern from a pattern template

It is recommended that you use only the third option, creating a new prediction pattern only from an existing pattern template.  This is a more efficient option than creatnga new template. NOBLE staff will never use the second option — Importing a prediction pattern.

Prediction patterns can be shared within NOBLE or within your library; a number of common prediction patterns (e.g. weekly, monthly, quarterly) and unique patterns (e.g. Fortune, Forbes) will be maintained by NOBLE and shared among all libraries.

Creating a Prediction Pattern from a Template

To create a prediction pattern from an existing prediction pattern template:

  • From the “Manage Predictions” tab, select “Create from Template”
  • Choose a template from the menu
  • Leave the type as “Basic” and click on “Create” to apply the template.
  • The prediction pattern will display below.  Click on “Predict New Issues” to generate issues to receive
  • Next, input the number of predicted issues you would like to generate and click “Save”
  • Note: depending upon the prediction pattern chosen, you may need to add volume information as in the example below

Note: The predicted issues will display on the “Manage” issues tab

Editing Prediction Patterns

There may be times when you cannot simply use an existing prediction pattern template, but need to edit a template to match your title’s publication schedule. Prediction patterns can be edited from the Serials Administration menu.

To edit a prediction pattern:

  • Select Administration –> Serials Administration –>Prediction Pattern Templates
  • Select the prediction pattern you wish to edit
  • Select “Edit Record” from the “Actions” menu;

Note: in this example we are editing a prediction pattern for a quarterly publication schedule. “Chrono only” indicates that only the month and year — and not volume and number information — are part of the pattern.

  • You may change the name of the prediction pattern, the Owning Library and/or the Share Depth (who the prediction pattern is shared with)

In this example, we change the pattern from a Quarterly/Seasonal to Bimonthly

To edit the prediction pattern parameters, click on the “Pattern Wizard” and navigate through the Pattern Wizard, changing any necessary elements of the pattern

  • First choose the enumeration labels; Note: in the example we will use Calendar dates (chronology) only
  • Click “Next”
  • Do not select “Chronology Captions”
  • Click “Next”
  • Always choose “Can compress or expand” as the Compression Display Option and “Captons verified, all levels present” as the Caption Evaulation
  • Click “Next”
  • Change the publication frequency as needed; Note: in this example, we will edit the frequency from Quarterly to “Every other month (Bimonthly)
  • Select “Use specific regularity information?” to enter data regarding combined or skipped issues, as needed
  • When you have finished making edits and reached the last Pattern Wizard screen, click “Save”

Deleting Prediction Patterns

Prediction patterns can be deleted, as long as no issues generated for them have been received. You should only delete a prediction pattern that you have created for the title. This may happen occasionally if you inadvertently choose a prediction pattern template that does not apply to your title’s publication schedule.

  • On the main record screen, select the subscription
  • Click on “Manage Predictions” tab
  • Select the “Delete” option for the prediction pattern you wish to delete

The following message will display:

  • Select “OK/Continue”

Deleting Prediction Pattern Templates

Occasionally, it may be necessary to delete a prediction pattern template. You should delete only templates that you have created. You may wish to delete a template if you have made an error in its creation or, possibly, if you realize you have duplicated an existing template.

  • Select Administration ->> Serials Administration ->> Prediction Pattern Templates
  • Select the checkbox of the pattern you wish to delete
  • From the “Actions” menu, choose “Delete Selected”
